Consulting with Residents - Results

Northumbria Police work together with the six local councils, the Probation Service and the Local Criminal Justice Board to conduct the Safer Communities Survey. This asks a series of questions to help all partners to understand the views and experiences of residents about life in their local neighbourhood and the work of the police and council to tackle crime and anti-social behaviour.

Force - Safer Communities Survey Results

In the 12 months to December 2016, 6,001 residents were surveyed across the force area; of these, 1,970 (33%) identified at least one problem in their neighbourhood.

The top five neighbourhood problems are:

  • Young people being rowdy or a nuisance
  • Rubbish or litter lying around
  • Inconsiderate parking
  • Dog fouling
  • Speeding or Dangerous driving

Other key findings from the Safer Communities Survey include:

  • 98% of residents feel very or fairly safe living in their neighbourhood;
  • 91% of residents agree that the police can be relied on to sort out problems in their neighbourhood;
  • 85% of residents think the police in their neighbourhood do a good or excellent job;
  • 59% of residents state the number of times they see officers on foot in their neighbourhood is about right.

 


Northern Area Command - Safer Communities Survey Results

In the 12 months to December 2016, 2,339 residents were surveyed across the area command; of these, 695 (30%) identified at least one problem in their neighbourhood.

The top five neighbourhood problems are:

  • Young people being rowdy or a nuisance
  • Dog fouling
  • Rubbish or litter lying around
  • Speeding or dangerous driving
  • Inconsiderate parking

Other key findings from the Safer Communities Survey include:

  • 98% of residents feel very or fairly safe living in their neighbourhood;
  • 92% of residents agree that the police can be relied on to sort out problems in their neighbourhood;
  • 86% of residents think the police in their neighbourhood do a good or excellent job;
  • 62% of residents state the number of times they see officers on foot in their neighbourhood is about right.

Central Area Command - Safer Communities Survey Results

In the 12 months to December 2016, 1,948 residents were surveyed across the area command; of these, 746 (38%) identified at least one problem in their neighbourhood.

The top five neighbourhood problems are:

  • Young people being rowdy or a nuisance
  • Rubbish or litter lying around
  • Inconsiderate parking
  • Vandalism, graffiti or deliberate damage
  • People using or dealing drugs

Other key findings from the Safer Communities Survey include:

  • 97% of residents feel very or fairly safe living in their neighbourhood;
  • 91% of residents agree that the police can be relied on to sort out problems in their neighbourhood;
  • 85% of residents think the police in their neighbourhood do a good or excellent job;
  • 55% of residents state the number of times they see officers on foot in their neighbourhood is about right.

Southern Are Command -  Safer Communities Survey Results

In the 12 months to December 2016, 1,714 residents were surveyed across the area command; of these, 529 (31%) identified at least one problem in their neighbourhood.

The top five neighbourhood problems are:

  • Young people being rowdy or a nuisance
  • Rubbish or litter lying around
  • Mini-motos/Scramblers/Off road motorbikes
  • Dog fouling
  • Inconsiderate parking

Other key findings from the Safer Communities Survey include:

  • 98% of residents feel very or fairly safe living in their neighbourhood;
  • 90% of residents agree that the police can be relied on to sort out problems in their neighbourhood;
  • 85% of residents think the police in their neighbourhood do a good or excellent job;
  • 59% of residents state the number of times they see officers on foot in their neighbourhood is about right.
