Provision of information held by Northumbria Police made under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (the 'Act') 

Thank you for your e mail dated 12 October 2016 in which you made a request for access to certain information which may be held by Northumbria Police.

As you may be aware the purpose of the Act is to allow a general right of access to information held at the time of a request, by a Public Authority (including the Police), subject to certain limitations and exemptions. 

You asked:

1. The number of people charged by Northumbria Police with possession of cannabis each year in 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, and 2015.

2. The number of people cautioned by Northumbria Police for possession of cannabis each year in 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, and 2015.

Please provide the information, listed year by year

3. Also, please release the force’s official policy in regards to enforcing legislation around cannabis possession and production.


We have now had the opportunity to fully consider your request and I provide a response for your attention. 

Following receipt of your request, searches were conducted with the Corporate Developement and Criminal Justice Departments of Northumbria Police. I can confirm that the information you have requested is held by Northumbria Police.

3.Northumbria Police follows the national guidance on terms of enforcing cannabis possession and production. In terms of cannabis possession this can either be an out of court disposal (Cannabis Warning/Penalty Notice/Caution) or prosecution depending on specific criteria.
