Provision of information held by Northumbria Police made under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (the 'Act')(FOIA)

Thank you for your email dated 4 November 2013 in which you made a request for access to certain information which may be held by Northumbria Police.

As you may be aware the purpose of the Act is to allow a general right of access to information held by a Public Authority (including the Police), subject to certain limitations and exemptions.

You asked: 

I am interested in statistics for calls received relating to incidents of domestic violence during the festive season.
 
Specifically I would like to know:
 
The number of calls the force received relating to domestic violence from December 15th – January 5th in 2010, 2011 and 2012.
Please show the number of calls for each day during that period.

We have now had the opportunity to fully consider your request and I provide a response for your attention.

Following receipt of your request, searches were conducted with the Communication Department  of Northumbria Police. I can confirm that the information you have requested is held by Northumbria Police.

I have today decided to disclose the located information to you as follows.

Northumbria Police use the term "Domestic Abuse" and no longer use "Domestic Violence". "Domestic Abuse" is the term used by the Home Office and is consistent with a definition broader than "violence" on its own. All of the data in this response, relates to "Domestic Abuse"
 
The request asked specifically for "calls". We cannot identify the number of actual telephone calls relating to domestic violence or any other specific subject. However, when we receive reports or calls for services, we record them on a computerised incident log. These records relate to matters that have been reported by telephone, whether emergency or non-emergency and also those matters reported via SMS, the internet, letters, in person or any other method of contact. The data below therefore relates to reports of domestic abuse, however that report was made and not just "calls".

As December and January (in the format of the request) are in different years, we have taken it that the 3 most recent Christmas periods are what are being asked for, i.e. 15/12/2010 to 05/01/2011, 15/12/2011 to 05/01/2012 and 15/12/2012 to 05/01/2013. The dates are also inclusive, therefore each number below covers a period of 22 days.
