Provision of information held by Northumbria Police made under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (the 'Act')

Thank you for your e mail dated 19 October 2016 in which you made a request for access to certain information which may be held by Northumbria Police. 

As you may be aware the purpose of the Act is to allow a general right of access to information held at the time of a request, by a Public Authority (including the Police), subject to certain limitations and exemptions.

You asked: 

1. How many hate crimes against under-18s have been recorded by police for the last three years – from 1 April 2013 to 31 March 2016.

2. Please could you provide figures broken down into annual datasets – a table with the breakdown of offences or incidents and the ages and genders of the victims for each offence.

3. Please provide corresponding hate crime strand for those offences i.e. specifically disability, race, religion, transgender identity, sexual orientation. Or if appropriate, according to a subculture i.e. hate crimes suffered by Goths.

4. Following the introduction of a mandatory cyber-flag, how many recorded hate crimes on under-18s have had a cyber-flag attached to them between 1 April 2015 to 31 March 2016.

5. Please provide breakdown of annual dataset, inclusive, ages and genders of victims in cyber-flagged offences, the nature of the cyber-flagged offence i.e. Twitter, Facebook, Snapchat, etc, and breakdown of offences and corresponding hate crime strands of disability, race, religion, transgender identity, sexual orientation and, if appropriate, subculture.  

We have now had the opportunity to fully consider your request and I provide a response for your attention. 

Following receipt of your request, searches were conducted with the Corporate Development Department  of Northumbria Police. I can confirm that the information you have requested is held by Northumbria Police. 

I am able to disclose the located information to you as follows. 

The information provided is based on crimes with at least one hate type flag attached and the victim was aged under 18 years old when the crime was created. Cyber crimes are those where the method/means in the Modus Operandi of the crime record includes ‘cyber crime’. 

With the above in mind please see the attached which answers your query.

Due to the different methods of recording information across 43 forces, a specific response from one constabulary should not be seen as an indication of what information could be supplied (within cost) by another.  Systems used for recording these figures are not generic, nor are the procedures used locally in capturing the data.  For this reason responses between forces may differ, and should not be used for comparative purposes.
