Date of response:   09/07/2012

Provision of information held by Northumbria Police made under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (the 'Act')(FOIA)

Thank you for your email dated 30 June 2012 in which you made a request for access to certain information which may be held by Northumbria Police.

As you may be aware the purpose of the Act is to allow a general right of access to information held by a Public Authority (including the Police), subject to certain limitations and exemptions.

You asked:

"I was wondering if you had any data which shows how many victims of racist hate crime are white British compared with victims from a BME group. I would also request that that information is also broken up into how many woman compared with men, so I can pinpoint how many women from a particular ethnic group are victims of hate crime. I would request that the data be broken up per calendar year from 01/01/2009 - 31/12/2011. "

In response:

We have now had the opportunity to fully consider your request and I provide a response for your attention.

Following receipt of your request, searches were conducted with the Corporate Development Department of Northumbria Police.  I can confirm that the information you have requested is held by Northumbria Police.

I have decided to disclose the located information to you as follows.

"Hate crime" is  defined as "Any hate crime is any criminal offence perceived by the victim or any person to be motivated by prejudice or hate".  "Race hate" Includes skin colour, nationality - place of birth, ethnic or national origins (including countries within the UK and travelling communities).

The information in this response is based on the total number of crimes where on the Modus Operandi screen of the crime a "Y" has been place against "Racist Hate".
