Sexual ofences - 483/16
Dated: 12 May 2016
Provision of information held by Northumbria Police made under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (the 'Act')
Thank you for your e mail dated 13 April 2016 in which you made a request for access to certain information which may be held by Northumbria Police.
As you may be aware the purpose of the Act is to allow a general right of access to information held at the time of a request, by a Public Authority (including the Police), subject to certain limitations and exemptions.
For each year between 2010 and now, I want statistics for reports of sexual assaults (inc rape) on public transport.
So for each year:.
1. How many sexual assaults were there on the Tyne and Wear Metro
2. How many sexual assaults were there on buses within your police area
3. How many sexual assaults were there on trains in your police area?
4. How many sexual assaults were there at train stations, bus stations and metro stations?
5. For each year, how many reports resulted in a conviction.
6. For each year, could I also have the crimes divided into areas (eg, Newcastle, Sunderland, Whitley Bay, Tynemouth, Shields, Pelaw, Hexham) or as best as you can do.
Eg (Whitley Bay 2010 sexual assaults on pub transport = 14)
To clarify at point 6 by 'divided into areas' I mean settlements. Eg Newcastle, Sunderland, Tynemouth etc. If that isn't possible, then divide into council areas (newcastle, N Tyneside etc).
I am seeking recorded Crimes, not reports.
Point 1 is on Tyne Wear Metro carriages.
To further clarify at point 6, if it happened in Newcastle, then Newcastle. If it happened in Whitley Bay, then Whitley Bay. If you can't be that specific then I would like it in local authority area.
I would like bus stops, shelters and railway lines/stations included in the searches. Unless that takes it over the cost threshold, in which case, remove them.
We have now had the opportunity to fully consider your request and I provide a response for your attention.
Following receipt of your request, searches were conducted with the Corporate Development Department of Northumbria Police. I can confirm that the information you have requested is held by Northumbria Police.
I am able to disclose the located information to you as follows.
The information provided is for crimes up to 27/04/2016. A manual review of all metro premises locations was carried out to determine if the offence took place on a metro or in a station but this is not always clear.
Offences of exposure have not been included as, although it is classed as a sexual offence, it is not a sexual assault.
With the above in mind please see the attached which answers your query.
Due to the different methods of recording information across 43 forces, a specific response from one constabulary should not be seen as an indication of what information could be supplied (within cost) by another. Systems used for recording these figures are not generic, nor are the procedures used locally in capturing the data. For this reason responses between forces may differ, and should not be used for comparative purposes.
The information we have supplied to you is likely to contain intellectual property rights of Northumbria Police. Your use of the information must be strictly in accordance with the Copyright Designs and Patents Act 1988 (as amended) or such other applicable legislation. In particular, you must not re-use this information for any commercial purpose.
