Provision of information held by Northumbria Police made under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (the 'Act')(FOIA)

Thank you for your email dated  20 March 2012 in which you made a request for access to certain information which may be held by Northumbria Police.

As you may be aware the purpose of the Act is to allow a general right of access to information held by a Public Authority (including the Police), subject to certain limitations and exemptions.

You asked: 

Full details of claims made, settled and pending under the Riot (Damages) Act 1886 since the riots of Summer 2011.

I would like, for each month during the period,
the number of claims made, from both the insured and uninsured,
the number settled,
the amounts paid out,
the highest payment made,
the grounds for claim/settlement,
the amounts outstanding, etc, plus
"running totals" in each category for each month, and the final figures.

I would also like details of fraudulent or exaggerated claims (described during a House of Lords debate by Lord Henley as "overgenerous") entered and struck out, reduced or otherwise during the period.

In response:

We have now had the opportunity to fully consider your request and I provide a response for your attention.

Following receipt of your request, searches were conducted with the Legal Department of Northumbria Police.  I can confirm that the information you have requested is held in part by Northumbria Police.

I have today decided to disclose the located information to you as follows.

  1. Northumbria Police have had two claims made under the Riot (Damages) Act 1886 since the riots of summer 2011.  Both of these claims were repudiated.

  2. Not applicable - see above
