Provision of information held by Northumbria Police made under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (the 'Act')(FOIA)

Thank you for your email dated 10 April 2013 in which you made a request for access to certain information which may be held by Northumbria Police.

As you may be aware the purpose of the Act is to allow a general right of access to information held by a Public Authority (including the Police), subject to certain limitations and exemptions.

You asked: 

My request relates to the case of PC Stephen Mitchell, who was jailed for carrying out sex attacks on women in the Northumbria force area. 

My questions are as follows:

  1. How much to date has been paid out in compensation to victims of his crimes ?

  2. How many victims has the force been in negotiation with or is still in negotiation with in terms of potential compensation payments ?

  3. What are the ranges of payments (largest to smallest) and are they final settlements ?

In response:

We have now had the opportunity to fully consider your request and I provide a response for your attention.

Following receipt of your request, searches were conducted with the Legal Department  of Northumbria Police. I can confirm that the information you have requested is held by Northumbria Police.

I have today decided to disclose the located information to you as follows.

  1. Total compensation paid to date is £49,790.00.

  2. The Force is still in negotiation with four claimants in terms of potential compensation payments.

  3. The range of payments are from £30,000 to £4,540.  All final settlements.

Please note that future requests on this subject may attract exemptions under Section 40 of the Act. The Force is aware of the increased risk of repeated requests that can be used to obtain disclosure of information that can have a mosaic effect when combinations of data can produce a picture to potentially identify individuals.

The information we have supplied to you is likely to contain intellectual property rights of Northumbria Police.  Your use of the information must be strictly in accordance with the Copyright Designs and Patents Act 1988 (as amended) or such other applicable legislation.  In particular, you must not re-use this information for any commercial purpose.

How to complain
