Provision of information held by Northumbria Police made under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (the 'Act')(FOIA)

Thank you for your email dated 20 March  2012 in which you made a request for access to certain information which may be held by Northumbria Police.

As you may be aware the purpose of the Act is to allow a general right of access to information held by a Public Authority (including the Police), subject to certain limitations and exemptions.

You asked: 

  1. The number of canteens/dining halls located within police buildings/stations and their addresses

  2. Details ie the name of the contractor that provides catering services to the police authority

  3. An example of a recent weekly lunch (and breakfast and dinner if applicable) menu, including all choices and typical prices

  4. The annual cost to the authority of providing a catering service

  5. Average spending per meal per officer/staff member

In response:

We have now had the opportunity to fully consider your request and I provide a response for your attention.

Following receipt of your request, searches were conducted with the Finance & Resources Department of Northumbria Police.  I can confirm that the information you have requested is held by Northumbria Police.

I have decided to disclose the located information to you as follows.

  1. The Force has one canteen and two small sandwich kiosks located in Police HQ, Ponteland, Newcastle upon Tyne

  2. Aramark currently provides a catering service to the HQ site

  3. Only breakfasts and lunches are offered. These change daily 
    Breakfast - A traditional breakfast service including Toast and Tea - £3.00,
    Hot Main lunch meals ( usually 3) , Sandwiches & Salads. A hot meal e.g curry and rice will be priced at £2.90, sandwiches are priced at £2.40 ( baguette)

  4. The costs to Force of providing this service is £45,000 exc equipment maintenance & utility costs .   
    The service is being reviewed in order to significantly reduce these costs.

  5. Staff using the Service spend on average £2.50 per visit

How to complain
