Provision of information held by Northumbria Police made under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (the 'Act')(FOIA)

Thank you for your email dated 13 May 2012 in which you made a request for access to certain information which may be held by Northumbria Police.

As you may be aware the purpose of the Act is to allow a general right of access to information held by a Public Authority (including the Police), subject to certain limitations and exemptions.

You asked: 

Recorded discrepancies relating to the storage of narcotics seized by Northumbria Police over the last three years (15/05/2009 – 15/05/2012).

A discrepancy in this instance refers to an incident in which all or part of a given seizure cannot be accounted for, after it has been taken into the possession of Northumbria Police.  Details of such incidents should include the following:

a. The date the narcotics were seized;
b. The location and circumstances in which they were seized;
c. The type of narcotic (or suspected narcotic) seized;
d. The weight of the narcotic when seized;
e. The weight of the narcotic when the discrepancy was identified;
f. How and where the narcotics concerned had been stored by Northumbria Police prior to and at the time the discrepancy was identified (i.e. drug store, Byker police station);
g. Whether there was an investigation into the discrepancy and if so what the outcome was;
h. Whether the narcotics have since been disposed of.

In response:

We have now had the opportunity to fully consider your request and I provide a response for your attention.

Following receipt of your request, searches were conducted with the Professional Standards Department of Northumbria Police where such irregularities would be investigated as conduct issues.

From searches made for the keywords 'drug' and 'narcotic' for the time period specified,  I can confirm that the information you have requested is not held  by Northumbria Police. There have been no such allegations.

You may be interested to know that Northumbria Police routinely publish information that has been disclosed by Northumbria Police in response to requests made under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 via the Disclosure Log.  The aim of the Disclosure Log is to promote openness and transparency by voluntarily placing information into the public arena.
