A man is in custody after police search Cramlington house.

At 11:45am on Thursday, January 8, police attended an address in Ridley Street in Cramlington and arrested a 36-year-old man on suspicion of importing offensive weapons.

A search was carried out of the property and officers found a number of suspicious chemicals inside the address.

As a precaution the bomb disposal unit attended, carried out checks on the liquids and removed them from the premises.

The bomb disposal unit has now left the area and have taken the liquids away for for further testing.

Local officers will remain at the property overnight and enquiries into the incident are ongoing.

The arrested man remains in police custody and officers would like to reassure residents that there is no risk to safety.

There is nothing to suggest this is anything other than an isolated matter and we are confident it is not linked to any other recent incidents.

Ridley Street is open to traffic and the public.

Anyone with concerns can speak to an officer face to face or by ringing police on 101.
