Youths throwing stones at traffic in Gateshead are being warned they are putting people's lives at risk.

The dangerous activity has taken place recently along Askew Road and outside Eslington Park.

Several cars have been damaged, with the latest incidents on Wednesday afternoon, January 14, when damage was caused to a Vauxhall Meriva's window and shortly afterwards, at 5.20pm, damage was caused to an Audi.

And at 3pm on Sunday, January 11, damage was caused to the door of a blue Mazda.

Police are carrying out patrols in the area to prevent incidents taking place and officers are asking motorists to be vigilant.

Neighbourhood Inspector Cheryl Warcup said: "The youngsters may see this as some sort of prank but that is far from the case. It's irresponsible and dangerous - they are putting people at risk and someone could get seriously injured.

"And it's an offence, so they could end up with a criminal record which will ultimately impact on their future. They need to think carefully about their actions.

"We're carrying out an operation in the area to identify those involved - we know it will only be a handful of young people who are doing this - and I'd ask motorists in the area to report anything they see or any descriptions or information to police."

Anyone with information should contact police on 101 or the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
