Police are appealing for information after a robbery in Sunderland.

The incident happened just before 10am on Tuesday, January 20. Police were informed a jewellers in Athenaeum Street in Sunderland City Centre had been robbed.

A member of staff at the jewellers suffered minor injuries during the incident and received hospital treatment.

Cash and jewellery were stolen in the robbery. The offenders are described as wearing dark clothing and were not armed.

Extra officers are in the area to offer reassurance and carry out enquiries.

It's believed the offenders made off in a silver Mazda MX5 which was later found abandoned on Sheepfolds Industrial Estate.

Officers are carrying out enquiries and asking anything suspicious around Athenaeum Street or saw the vehicle to contact them.

Detective Inspector Dave English, said: "We're keen to speak to anyone who was in the city centre around Athenaeum Street on Tuesday morning or anyone who saw a silver Mazda MX5 - either before or after the robbery."
