Police are advising people not to let strangers into their homes after an elderly woman had cash stolen

The incident happened at a house in Gateshead on Monday, January 26, at 11.50am, when the 89-year-old woman answered a knock at her door in the Bill Quay area.

The man claimed he had a parcel to deliver to a neighbour who was not at home. He asked to wait inside her home.  He distracted her by asking for a cup of tea, and when she went into the kitchen he stole an amount of cash from her purse. He left saying he had other parcels to deliver and the resident then realised that cash was missing.

The offender is described as approximately 5ft 10ins tall, slim build wearing a dark jacket with some red colouring inside and a dark woolly hat.

Extra officers are in the area carrying out enquiries and providing reassurance to the community.
