Police are reminding residents to be on their guard after reports of a bogus caller in Gateshead.

The first offence happened at 5pm on Wednesday, January 21 at Yetholm Road, and the second around 5.30pm on Saturday, January 24 at Richmond Court.

On both occasions a man has called at a number of addresses and asked the occupants if they would be interested in buying cigarettes, saying he would sell a carton of 200 cigarettes at low cost.

He then asks the occupant for a £20 deposit, saying he will return with the cigarettes in a few minutes - but then leaves with the money and doesn't come back.

Similar incidents were reported on January 27 in Gosforth, Newcastle.

Police are reminding residents not to hand over money to anyone who cold calls at their address offering to sell goods - and are reminding people if an offer seems too good to be true, it probably is.

Anyone who receives a call of this nature is urged not to hand over any money but to report the incident to police straight away.

Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 101 ext 69191, or independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
