A man has been arrested in connection with a cigarette fraud.
Since December 2014 there has been a spate of incidents where a man has been attending the homes of elderly residents in East Tynedale and offering to sell cigarettes or cigars at very cheap prices.
On four separate occasions occupants have handed over money and the man has then failed to return with any items and has made off leaving the householder out of pocket.
East Tynedale Neighbourhood Policing Team, led by Insp Julie Cole, alerted residents to this scam by carrying out door to door activity, speaking to residents, as well as community messaging and leaflet drops.
The team liaised with officers from both Newcastle and Gateshead and established that offences had also taken place in those areas.
On Tuesday February 3, a 29 year old man from the Slatyford area of Newcastle was arrested at an address in Prudhoe in connection with the offences. He's been bailed pending further enquiries.
Enquiries are ongoing and anyone with information is asked to contact police on 101 ext 69191, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
