Police are appealing for help to trace a witness after suspicious incidents in Newcastle.

At 3.27am, on Thursday, February 5, police on patrol at Newton Road in Heaton were flagged down by a man, who told officers he'd seen four males acting suspiciously around a white delivery van which was parked up outside the Co-op on Newton Road.

The witness then said he challenged the four which resulted in one of them kicking him in the leg.

The officers carried out a search of the area resulting in four youths aged 17, two aged 16 and one aged 15, being arrested on suspicion of attempted theft of a motor vehicle.

When officers returned to speak to the original witness he had left the area. Police are appealing for this witness to come forward as he has important information about the investigation.

Police believe the incident may be linked to an earlier report of an attempt to break into a van in the car park at Heaton Manor Lower School at Jesmond Park West in Heaton, which happened at 2.50am, also on Thursday, February 5.

Four youths were seen to climb over the fence and try to break into the van.

Anyone who has information about either incident is asked to contact police on 101 ext 69191, quoting reference 87 05/02/15, or independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
