Police are reminding residents to be on their guard to bogus callers in Newcastle and Gateshead.

Since December there have been three incidents reported to police where a man has knocked at the door of a house and asked to use a pen and paper. In all cases the resident has been an elderly person and has invited the man in, on at least one occasion he has stolen something from inside the property.

There have been a further two incidents, one where a woman has found a stranger in her home who claimed to be carrying out work at a neighbour's home and a second where a man claimed to have been told the house was student accommodation and he'd been invited to look around it.
