Spate of robberies in Gateshead

Police have arrested three men after a spate of robberies in Gateshead.

Between 8am and 1pm today, Saturday February 7, officers received seven reports of robberies having happened in the central Gateshead area.

A woman had her handbag stolen on the Stonecrop estate, a man was punched in Esk Street and shops were targeted in Balmoral Drive, Old Durham Road, Durham Road, Brinkburn Avenue, Saltwell Road and Rectory Road areas.

Damage has been caused to some of the shops targeted however no one is seriously injured.

Officers are exploring the possibility the incidents may be linked and have arrested three men on suspicion of robbery. They are currently in custody.

Extra officers in the area to reassure residents and carry out enquiries and anyone who may have witnessed any of the incidents, or anyone with any information, is asked to contact police on 101 ext 69191 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
