Police in Gateshead are reminding residents to lock out burglars, particularly overnight.

During the weekend police were informed of three burglaries - in Topcliffe Green, Skipton Green and Tivertons Gardens. They happened overnight between Saturday evening and Sunday morning (February 7 to February 8).

Officers are reminding residents to remember their home security and make sure front and back doors are locked securely - even if they are in the property.

Neighbourhood Inspector Colin Lowther said: "Most of these thieves are opportunist and see an open or unlocked door as an easy target. It only takes a few moments to lock the door but it could help deter a burglar. Our advice would be to always lock external access doors even if you are in the property. It is also good practice to double check doors before you go to bed to make sure they're locked.

"We're carrying out enquiries into these burglaries and would ask anyone who thinks they have information to speak to us."

Northumbria Police is currently running Operation Soundwave aimed at targeting criminals involved in crimes such as burglaries. Crime Prevention is a key part in the campaign, further crime prevention advice can be found at www.northumbria.police.uk

Anyone with information about the burglaries is asked to contact Northumbria Police on 101 ext 69191 quoting reference number 529 080215 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
