Police are appealing for witnesses following a handbag snatch in Newcastle.

It happened at 6.55am on Monday, February 9, on Coniston Avenue in Jesmond.

A 22-year-old woman was walking along the street when a man driving a small black car stopped. He got out of the car, walked towards her and demanded money, and grabbed hold of her wrist.  She refused and he pulled her handbag from her shoulder, and she fell to the ground and he drove off towards Osbourne Road with the stolen bag.

The woman was bruised and shaken suffering minor injuries during the incident.  Her handbag contained a white coloured Apple Mini iPad, cash, rail tickets to Sheffield and other items.

The offender is described as being a white man, 5ft 7" tall, with a pale complexion, skinny build and aged 25-35 years.
He was wearing a black woollen hat and dark clothing.

Neighbourhood Inspector Neil Brotherton said: "We know that these sorts of unusual incidents do cause concern for residents and we have additional uniform officers on patrol in the area to answer any questions people may have."
