Police are appealing for information after a bogus caller incident in Newcastle.

It happened between 11am and 12pm this morning, Friday, February 13, at an address in Gosforth. A man called at a house in the street claiming to be selling items. The occupant, an 88-year-old woman, invited him in, once inside the man asked for a glass of water and distracted her before stealing cash.

The offender is described as white, in his early 30s, slim build, wearing dark clothing with short brown hair. It's believed he had a zipped up large holdhall bag. He was wearing shoes with a thick sole and was nicely spoken.

Ch Insp John Hall said: "We want to remind residents not to allow strangers into their homes.

"I'd urge people who have an unexpected caller, to ask them to come back when they have someone with them at their home.

"ID should always be checked and details can be verified by telephoning the company the caller says they are from, such callers should be left outside while you make the phone call.

"A genuine caller will not mind coming back later or having their credentials checked."
