Woman found dead in South Shields

This is an update following the murder of a woman in South Shields on Sunday, March 15.

Police have now charged a man in connection with the 23-year-old's death.

Anthony Ross, 24, of Oak Avenue, South Shields has been charged with murder. He will appear before South Tyneside Magistrates' Court on March 17.

A 48-year-old man arrested on suspcion of assisting an offender will receive no further police action.


Police are appealing for information after a woman was found dead at a house in South Shields.

At 8.10pm police were called to an address in Oak Avenue in South Shields. Police and paramedics attended and a woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

Officers are carrying out enquiries to establish the circumstances surrounding the woman's death.

A 24-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder and is in police custody.

A 48-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender and is also in police custody.

Extra officers are in the area to carry out enquiries and offer reassurance to local residents.

Detective Chief Inspector Andy Fairlamb said: "Local residents will see an increased police presence in the area as we carry out enquiries into this incident. Officers are also in the area to offer reassurance and anyone concerned can speak to an officer.

"If anyone has information that could help with police enquiries I'd urge them to contact police."
