Attempted shop robbery

Police are appealing for witnesses following an attempted robbery at a South Tyneside newsagents.

It happened at 9.32am on Tuesday, March 17, at Simonside News in Stanhope Road. A man entered the store and threatened staff with a knife but left empty handed, he made off with two other man who remained outside. 

No one was injured during the incident, but staff were shocked.

Officers have been carrying out enquiries in the area and a 19-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of robbery and is currently in custody.

Police are also looking for the two other men who was outside the shop while the incident took place. 

Police are appealing for witnesses anyone who was in the area and who may have seen or heard anything suspicious is asked to contact them.
