Police are appealing for witnesses following a hit and run collision in Newcastle.

It happened on Benwell Lane in the early hours of Sunday, August 2, at 12.55am.

A 42-year-old woman crossing the road was struck by a large silver car outside Ringo Pizza. The vehicle drove off towards the B&Q store without stopping.

The woman suffered a head wound and was taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary. She was released following treatment.

Officers are making extensive enquiries into the incident and are looking at CCTV in the area in order to identify the vehicle responsible.

Sergeant Jason Ryder, from Northumbria Police Motor Patrols said: "We want to hear from anyone who saw this collision, and want to hear from anyone who may have details about the vehicle and the driver.

"This area has a number of fast food takeaways and there may have been a number of people calling in for food after a night out. If you were there on Benwell Lane at the relevant time please contact police."
