Northumbria's Police and Crime Commissioner has approved plans to re-locate neighbourhood officers from Newcastle's West End to Westgate Community College on nearby West Road.
The college is in the centre of the community in a busy area next to the Westgate Road shops. Officers will move in later this year to the new base which will have a separate public entrance on the ground floor for residents and visitors.
The new premises will retain the same opening hours as the old station and be open to the public every day from 8am to midnight.
This decision follows a month long consultation period which started in May with information available at five locations in the area including supermarkets, a Customer First Service Centre, and the current police station. Comments cards were supplied with a postbox at each location for residents and visitors to feedback their views on the proposal.
Officers also met with community groups, community leaders, local businesses and residents about the proposals and answered their questions. Leaflets were available to download from the force website in a variety of languages to meet local needs. Letters were also sent to local schools, with information to colleges and universities to inform students and staff.
Northumbria Police and Crime Commissioner Vera Baird said: "We have listened carefully to the views of a wide range of people who make up the population of the West End from residents, businesses, community groups, students and visitors.
"It is important to us that we make these necessary changes with the backing of the people who need and rely on our neighbourhood teams to police them and keep our communities safe. As Police and Crime Commissioner I was determined that people should have a real input into this decision and know that their views have been fully taken into account.
"It is also necessary that we make sure we get full value for the money we spend on our police premises. Sharing facilities, where possible with our partners, makes real financial sense and keeps our officers in locations fully accessible to the public."
Neighbourhood Inspector Barrie Joisce added: "Our officers have had great feedback about the proposed move from many members of the public and I'm very pleased this re-location will be going ahead later this year. The new base is in an ideal position for us to continue to deliver the neighbourhood policing service that people in the west end expect and value."
Officers from Neighbourhood Policing Teams for Scotswood, Fenham, Benwell, Elswick and Wingrove will move to the new office at Westgate Community College.
The West Road police station will be put up for sale following the relocation with proceeds from it put back into policing.
