Volunteer Police Cadets from North Tyneside have been helping out at a community event.

The teenagers were on duty to help officers police the launch festival at Northumberland Park in Tynemouth. The project was made possible by funding from North Tyneside Council and a £2.2m National Lottery boost from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) and the Big Lottery Fund (BLG).

The cadets were on hand to carry out patrols, wearing their uniform and being a visible police presence talking to residents and visitors while working alongside council staff to help the event run smoothly.

Chief Inspector Nicola Musgrove , Northern Area Command said: "The cadets are a real asset to the force and their enthusiasm was evident as they got fully involved in this community event.

"The cadets wore their uniforms with pride and helped the public to enjoy the special day."

Northumbria Police and Crime Commissioner Vera Baird said: "I have a lot of admiration for the Cadets as they show perfectly how young people can make a positive contribution to their community.

"It's wonderful to see how proud they are to wear their uniform and to see them engage with the public they come into contact with. They're an absolute credit to other young people who I hope are encouraged to find out more about becoming a Cadet."

North Tyneside Elected Mayor Norma Redfearn said: “I was delighted to see the cadets at the opening; with around 10,000 people in attendance, they had a very busy day, but they did a wonderful job helping our teams to run the successful event. Northumbria Police should be extremely proud of these brilliant young people.”

This event is just one example of the types of activities police cadets get involved in. The scheme gives young people the opportunity to see what it is like to be a police officer and police community support officer, take part in patrols and make a difference in the community.
