Distraction theft in Alnwick

Police are appealing for witnesses to a distraction theft in Northumberland.

It happened at approximately 11.40am on Friday, September 11 in Sainsbury's Car Park, Willowburn Avenue in Alnwick.

A woman had just returned to her car with her shopping when she was approached by a man in the car park. She left her bags on the front seat of her car and he asked her for directions, causing her to move away from her car.

After she drove home she found her bank card had been stolen and £500 withdrawn in cash.

The man who asked for directions is described as an Eastern European man, 5 feet 8" tall, approximately 40- 50 years with swept back dark hair with grey streaks. He was wearing a pale grey suit with no tie.

Police are carrying out enquiries in the area and are appealing for witnesses.

Sergeant Richie Anderson said: " We're appealing for witnesses to this incident. We also want to alert people to this type of crime and ask them to be vigilant and report any suspicious behaviour to police straightaway.
