Two injured in collision

Police are appealing for witnesses following a collision in South Tyneside.

It happened at 9.30am on Friday, December 11, on Wenlock Road. A man and a woman were crossing the road at a pedestrian crossing when for reasons yet to be established they were struck by a vehicle which made off from the scene without stopping.

The two pedestrians - a man and woman were both injured. A passing motorist called the emergency services. The man has been taken to the RVI with a serious head injury and the woman to South Tyneside General Hospital.

The road was closed while the collision was dealt with and re-opened at 11.30am.

A white van with red writing on it was seen to leave the area shortly after the collision and police want to trace the driver as they may not be aware that the collision has happened.  Police also want to speak to anyone else who was driving a van with a similar description who was in this area at the relevant time.

Police are appealing for the driver of the van to contact them. Officers also want to hear from any witnesses to come forward anyone who was in the area at the time and witnessed the collision is asked to contact Northumbria Police on 101 ext 69191 quoting log number 318 11/12/15.
