Serious assault in Newcastle

Police are appealing for witnesses after a serious assault in Newcastle.

At 8:15pm on Wednesday, December 23, a man and his wife were standing at a bus stop in New Bridge Street West, near to the Central Library, when they were approached by a man who became aggressive.

The offender punched the victim (who is in his 40s) and he fell to the floor suffering a serious head injury.

He was taken to hospital and is in a critical but stable condition.

A 26-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of GBH and is currently in custody.

Enquiries are ongoing and anyone who witnessed the attack, or who has any information that could assist with enquiries, is asked to contact police on 101 quoting reference number 1031 23/12/15.
