Police investigating a report of a rape in Newcastle are appealing for witnesses.

In the early hours of Sunday, December 20, police received a report a 27 year old woman had been raped in an area behind the Post Office and Leeds Bank in Vine Lane, off Northumberland Street, in the city centre. The incident happened between 12.40am and 1.20am.

A 33 year old man has been arrested on suspicion of rape and has been released on police bail.

Officers are continuing to carry out enquiries into the incident and have been viewing CCTV. It's believed two men were in the area at the time who could be key witnesses and saw or heard something that can help with police enquiries.

DC John Bentley said: "Understandably this is an incredibly distressing incident for the woman involved and we are continuing to offer her support and have specialist officers working with her at this time.

"Vine Lane is busy at this time of night with people visiting local bars and pubs in the area and I'd ask anyone who was out in Newcastle city centre on the night of Saturday, December 19 into the early hours of Sunday, December 20 to think back to the premises they visited, if they think they were around this area and saw something that can help our investigation then please get in contact.

"As part of our enquiries we have viewed CCTV and we believe we have identified two men who were in the bin/parking area at the time who could be key witnesses. The men were not involved in the incident in anyway but it is possible they saw or heard something that could prove crucial in our enquiries and we'd particularly like to hear from them."

The men, or anyone who was in the area or has information about the incident should contact Northumbria Police on 101 quoting reference 145 201215 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
