Police investigating a series of unusual incidents in Gosforth last week are releasing CCTV footage in an appeal to trace the man responsible.

Between 5.35pm and 6.10pm on Tuesday, January 5, a man was responsible for carrying out a number of bizarre acts in the areas around Regent Centre, Lansdowne Terrace, Henry Street, Regent Road and the High Street.

He approached a number of people and tried to steal items from them including umbrellas, headphones and bags.

One of the incidents was captured on CCTV and it shows the man walking down the High Street and approaching a woman at the bus stop before grabbing her bag and throwing it into the road.

Officers are releasing this footage in an appeal for anyone who thinks they might have seen the man, or knows who he is, to come forward with information so they can trace him and speak to him about the incidents.

He is described as being white, between 30 and 50 years old and between 5ft 7ins to 6ft tall. He was unshaven, wearing a dark coloured jacket and possibly tracksuit bottoms, black trainers with a white band around the sole and possibly spoke with a southern accent.

Anyone with information about any of these incidents is asked to contact police on 101, quoting log number 782 of 05/01/16.
