Two charged after Team Valley attempt robbery

Two men have been charged with attempt robbery after an incident in Gateshead.

At 7:40pm on Friday, January 8, two men entered the Sports Direct store on the Team Valley retail park and tried to steal clothing.

When challenged they threatened staff members with a knife before fleeing the scene in a car.

Enquiries carried out by Central CID led to two men being arrested and charged in connection with the incident.

Ronald Hutton, who is 45 and of Crowhall Towers in Felling, has been charged with attempt robbery, handling stolen goods, dangerous driving, driving whilst disqualified and no insurance. He appeared at South Tyneside Magistrates Court on January 11 and will appear at Newcastle Crown Court for trial on February 8. 

Paul Lee Phythian, who is 42 and of no fixed abode, has been charged with attempt robbery, handling stolen goods and possession of a knife. He appeared at South Tyneside Magistrates Court on January 11 and will appear at Newcastle Crown Court for trial on February 8.
