Motorists in Benwell and Elswick are being warned to lock their cars after a spate of thefts in the areas.

In the last couple of weeks there have been eight cars broken into in Normount Avenue, Clovelly Avenue, Grainger Park Road, Fairholm Road, Condercum Road, Clifton Road and Paignton Avenue.

Items such as spare change, mobile phones and MP3 players have been stolen.

A number of the cars targeted have been taxis with the thieves looking for cash floats and money being kept inside.

The Newcastle West Neighbourhood Policing Team have made arrests however they are urging people to take steps to avoid being targeted by car thieves.

Neighbourhood Inspector Barrie Joisce said: "Thieves are operating in the areas around Benwell and Elswick looking for easy opportunities to steal from cars. They are looking for cars that have been left unlocked or where valuables have been left inside.

"Remove all items of any value from your car. Take them into your home with you overnight and always make sure your car is locked.

"If you are a taxi driver then never leave amounts of money in your taxi and take all property with you whenever leaving your cab unattended."

Officers are carrying out extra high profile and plain clothed patrols in the areas at key times looking to catch the thieves.

They are also passing crime prevention onto local residents and also through taxi companies across Newcastle.
