Purse theft 'Good Samaritan' sought

Police investigating a purse theft in South Tyneside are appealing for a 'Good Samaritan' to come forward.

The incident happened on Friday, January 15, at 11.40am in the Boots store in Prince Edward Road, South Shields.  An 83-year-old woman was in the store when an offender reached into her bag and stole her purse.  Another man who was in the store stopped the offender and retrieved the purse and returned it to the elderly woman, he then left without leaving his details.

Officers were called to the incident and following enquiries a 45-year-old man was arrested and charged with theft from the person and is due to appear before Newcastle Magistrate's Court on Saturday morning.

Police would like to thank the  'Good Samaritan' for his actions and are appealing for him to come forward and make himself known to them.
