Police are warning of a major road closure this morning after a HGV has collided spilling diesel affecting all four carriageways, in both directions of the Central Motorway East in Newcastle.

It happened at just after 2am on Thursday, January 21, and it is likely to take until after 9am for the road to be cleared, central reservation repairs tobe made, the road to be cleaned-up and open again to traffic, affecting rush hour.

The following diversions are in place:

Southbound traffic is diverted off the CME at Cowhill

Northbournd traffic will be diverted off the CME at Great North Road

The incident happened when the HGV, for reasons yet to be established, has gone over the central reservation and onto it's side.  The driver has been taken to hospital as a precaution, he is not believed to be seriously injured.

Drivers are asked to find an alternative route if possible as severe delays are expected until the road is reopened.
