A policing task force in Newcastle has seized a number of legal highs which are suspected to contain controlled substances during an operation in the west end of the city.

Police officers carried out two search warrants at addresses in the area and seized a number of packets of legal highs which are suspected to contain controlled substances.

An investigation is now ongoing to establish if any criminal offences have been committed.

Newcastle Superintendent Richard Jackson said: "This operation saw us seize a number of legal highs and they have been sent away to find out exactly what is in them. When we get the results back further enquiries will be carried out and appropriate action taken depending on what are found in them.

"The task force recently set up to tackle the issue of legal highs is working around the clock to try and identify those responsible, and we will use all of our powers, as well as those of our partners such as Newcastle Council, to do all we can to stop them from peddling legal highs and causing misery and concern for residents in Newcastle."
