Two people have been arrested after an air weapon was discharged.

At 1.15pm yesterday afternoon (Tuesday, January 27) police received a report a man had been shot in the leg while he was on King George Playing Fields in Palgrove Road, in Sunderland. He was not seriously injured.

Officers attended and it was established the weapon involved was an air weapon.

A 21-year-old man and a 22-year-old woman have been arrested in connection with the incident and have been bailed pending further enquiries.

Neighbourhood Inspector Lisa Laverick said: "We take reports of this nature very seriously and while the weapon involved was an air weapon it has still caused the man to be injured albeit not seriously.

"Officers attended and two people - a man and a woman - were quickly arrested. Our enquiries will continue and I'd ask anyone who may have information to get in contact.

"Air weapons are not toys, they can cause injury and should only be used responsibly, for the purpose for which they're intended."

Any witnesses should contact Northumbria Police on 101 quoting reference 500 260116 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
