Appeal for information following coastal search operation

Police are appealing for the public's help after concern was raised that someone possibly entered the water at Longsands, Tynemouth.

At 5.45pm on Wednesday 10, February, police were informed by coastguards of a possible sighting of someone heading into the sea.

Coastguards led an extensive search and rescue operation with Northumbria Police, Tynemouth Volunteer Life Brigade and the RNLI all assisting with the joint response.

After a two-hour long operation, coastguards called a finish on the search but investigations into the incident remain ongoing.

Chief Inspector, Dave Gould, from Northumbria Police, said: "Considerable search and rescue efforts have been made this evening along the beach and in the waters; despite this, nobody has been found.

"If anyone was in the area at the time and thinks they saw something or has any information we urge them to contact us to help with our enquiries. "
