Kingston Park Retail Park in Newcastle has been awarded a Safer Parking Award by police.

Last week officers from the Newcastle North Neighbourhood Policing Team handed over the award to staff from the retail park after it was judged to be of the highest and safest standards.

The Safer parking Scheme is owned by the Associations of Chief Police Officers in England, Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland and is managed by the British Parking Association. It is supported by the Home Office in England and Wales and the Scottish Executive in Scotland.

It is presented to owners and managers of parking facilities who adopt physical standards, which are intended to reduce crime and the fear of crime from car parks.

The Scheme is a fantastic success and has in excess of four thousand eight hundred car parks adopting these standards throughout the country.

The award is based on such features as; Boundaries and perimeters, signage, safe routes in and out for vehicles and pedestrians, vehicle layout, surveillance (which may include CCTV), crime levels, lighting and management practices.

Local Neighbourhood Inspector Julie Rana said: "We are delighted to hand over this award to the team at Kingston Park. I hope motorists who live and visit the area will have increased confidence when they use the car parks because of this.

"We are committed to working with our partners and ensuring Newcastle's car parks are safe and secure and this award shows that we are heading in the right direction.

"We won't get complacent and motorists mustn't either - keep locking your vehicles when ever you leave them and never leave your shopping, or any other valuables, inside your car unattended."
