Newcastle Superintendent David Felton said: "We have officers carrying out searches of the park area this morning to try and identify exactly where this offence has taken place.

"They are checking CCTV cameras within and around the park to see if we can identify anyone entering or leaving the area around the time of the incident and we are speaking to local people to see if anyone saw or heard anything last night.

"We have specially trained officers supporting the victim and her family and we will have a policing presence in the Heaton Park and Jesmond Dene areas to reassure local residents.

"We are doing everything we can to identify and arrest the man responsible for this and we need anyone who might have any information that could help us to come forward and speak to us as soon as possible.

"Anyone who was walking, running or just in the area of Heaton Park or the surrounding areas last night, and who saw anyone or anything suspicious, please get in touch with police and help us find this man."
