Parcel of concern in North Shields

This is an update in relation to a concerning parcel delivered to an address in Norwick Road, North Shields.

Officers attended the scene earlier this afternoon, (Tuesday, February 23), to identify the contents of the parcel and a cordon was put in place as a matter of precaution. Specialist officers from the bomb disposal unit also attended to identify the contents of the parcel which is believed to contain a pyrotechnic device.

Officers will carry out a controlled explosion at Longsands beach, Tynemouth this evening. A cordon will be in place while the explosion is carried out.

Extra officers are on patrol in the Tynemouth and North Shields area speaking with people and offering reassurance.

Enquiries into the incident are ongoing.

Anyone with concerns is asked to speak with an officer face-to-face or by calling 101.

At 12.03pm this afternoon, (Tuesday, February 23), police received a report of a parcel delivered to an address in Norwic Road, North Shields which has caused concern.

Officers are currently on the scene and a cordon has been put in place as a matter of precaution while enquiries are carried out to identify the package.
