Officers from the Newcastle city centre Neighbourhood Policing Team are working with security and staff from intu Eldon Square to tackle anti-social behaviour.

They are teaming up together to carry out extra high visibility patrols on Friday and Saturday evenings over the next four weeks.

The action is in response to concerns about anti-social behaviour linked to people taking legal highs in the area around Old Eldon Square and it's hoped the extra police and security presence will act as a deterrent.

Officers will be moving anyone from the area who is causing disorder and taking action against anyone found committing offences.

The extra patrols will start from Friday (March 18th).

Newcastle City Centre Inspector Nicola Wearing said: "We are delighted to be working with staff from intu and helping them keep Eldon Square a nice and safe place for people to be. We've had reports of people taking legal highs in the area and then becoming involved in ASB or related crimes and this is something we are extremely keen to put a stop to as soon as possible. With the help of intu staff we want to make the area to be as safe as possible and this activity will go a long way in ensuring that is the case."

Phil Steele, general manager, intu Eldon Square, commented: "We are happy to be working with our partners at Northumbria Police to ensure that the location in Old Eldon Square provides the best environment for shopping in Newcastle city centre."
