Motorists in Gosforth and Brunton Park are being advised to make sure their cars are locked overnight after a spate of offences in the areas.

In the last month there has been six reported break-ins to cars all in Melbury Estate, Melton Park and Brunton Park.

The crimes have all happened overnight and all of the vehicles attacked were left open and unlocked.

Enquiries are ongoing into the thefts and officers are carrying out extra patrols and passing crime prevention advice onto residents in the local area.

Neighbourhood Inspector Julie Rana said: "I want to warn motorists, especially in the Gosforth and Brunton Park areas, that there are thieves operating in these areas and who are specifically looking for cars that have been left unlocked and with valuables left inside.

"We will do all we can to catch them and stop them but we need residents to help us by making sure their cars are always locked and secure overnight. Also by also reporting any suspicious people they see hanging around parked cars, especially on evenings and overnight.

"Lock and protect your vehicle, remove all valuables and if you see anyone acting suspiciously then ring and report it to us and we'll investigate."

Anyone with any information into the break-ins is asked to contact police in Newcastle on 101 quoting reference number 188 26/01/16.
