Last week officers from the intu Metro Centre Neighbourhood Policing Team were honoured at the North East Retail Crime Conference 2016.
The team were nominated for the category of 'most interactive policing team' and beat teams of officers from North Yorkshire, Middlesbrough and Durham to the award.
The conference is organised by the NERCP (North East Retail Crime Partnership) and is part of the Northumbria Coalition Against Crime.
It is held every 18 months and at the last awards in 2014 intu Metro Centre Sergeant Silvo Recchia won the 'outstanding contribution' award making it two out of two for the team.
Inspector Cheryl Warcup said: "This is fantastic recognition for a fantastic team. Silvo and all of the officers do an incredible job at the Metro Centre in keeping the area safe and crime free.
"To win the 'most interactive' award is quite an achievement considering they police an area that is two million square feet in size and sees 21 million people through the doors every year.
"I'm very proud of the team and the work they do, it's excellent that this has been recognised by the NERCP".
