Appeal after man attacked in Collingwood Street

Police are appealing for witnesses after an assault in Newcastle city centre.

At 1:20am on Monday, March 21, an 18-year-old man was assaulted in Collingwood Street after trying to break up an altercation between a man and woman.

After intervening, the victim was assaulted by a group of five or six men, who knocked him to the ground before kicking him in the face a number of times.

He was taken to hospital with injuries that included a fractured cheekbone that will require plates to be fitted into his face and further surgery.

One of the attackers is described as being white, of slim / muscular build and aged around 21 to 23 years old. He had short shaven dark hair and was wearing a black shirt and blue denim jeans.

There were a number of people in the area at the time of the attack and officers are appealing for anyone who saw what happened, or anyone with any information, to contact them on 101 quoting reference number 81 21/03/16.
