Aggravated burglary in Winlaton

Police are appealing for witnesses following an aggravated burglary in Gateshead.

Around 6:20pm on Wednesday, April 20, a group of men all wearing hooded tops and face coverings broke into a flat in West Lea in Winlaton.

When inside they assaulted the occupant, a 29-year-old man, and stole a number of items before fleeing in silver small hatchback style vehicle.

Officers believe there may have been five offenders in total and some of the group were armed with metal objects that were used to assault the victim.

He required hospital treatment to head injuries as a result of the attack.

They stole items from the flat including a black Asus tablet and a gold saddle ring which has blue tape wrapped around it.

A 24-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the incident and police believe those involved are known to each other.

Enquiries are ongoing and extra officers are in the area today to speak to neighbours and reassure local residents.
