Police in Tynemouth have arrested a man after he was caught trying car door handles.

At just after midnight in the early minutes of Friday, April 29, police received a report of a man trying car door handles in Park Crescent East, Park Avenue and Park Terrace.

Officers who were on patrol in the area responded and arrested a 20-year-old man on suspicion of theft. He remains in police custody.

Inspector, Gary Jones, is now urging anyone who witnesses anything that raises suspicions to always report it to police.

Insp Jones said: "I would like to thank residents in the area for coming forward with this information.

"Any information we receive from the public may be helpful when investigating incidents or reports and these people were right to report their concerns to police.

"I would ask anyone in our community who has any concerns or witnesses anything untoward, to report it to police. There may be a simple explanation to the behaviour but there is no harm in reporting it to make officers aware."

Anyone with any concerns can contact police on 101 or dial 999 in an emergency.
