Attempted robbery in Wrekenton

Police are appealing for witnesses following an attempted robbery in Gateshead.

At 9:30am on Tuesday, May 3, a 42-year-old woman was walking along Wrekenton front street when she was approached by a man.

He tried to snatch a bag she was carrying and the woman struggled and kept hold of it. During the altercation he then punched the woman in the shoulder.

A number of members of the public who were in the area at the time intervened and tried to help the woman and the offender fled empty handed.

He is described as being white, around 6ft tall, in his early 20s and of slim build. He was wearing a dark jacket with a grey hood or a grey hooded top underneath the jacket, dark jogging pants and trainers.

Enquiries are ongoing into the incident and anyone who was in Wrekenton front street on Tuesday morning and who saw anything is asked to contact police on 101 quoting reference number 232 03/05/16.
