We are committed to cutting the numbers of burglaries in Newcastle and Gateshead and working with our communities to help keep them safe.

Earlier this year we launched a burglary operation aimed at getting burglars off our streets and protecting peoples' homes.

Thanks to the hard work of detectives, 24/7 response and neighbourhood officers 44 people (38 males and 6 females) have been arrested in connection with burglaries in the two areas during May.

Of these 44:

16 have been charged with offences and will be appearing at court to face action.

14 have been bailed pending further enquiries.

9 have been released with no further action

4 were arrested in our area and passed to other forces in connection with crimes in their area

1 person was given a police caution.

Central Area Command Superintendent David Felton said: "Officers throughout Newcastle and Gateshead are working day and night to identify, stop and arrest burglars.

"Burglars target peoples' homes. They are opportunistic and prey on the vulnerable and we are committed to doing everything we can to keep burglars off our streets and put them behind bars.

"We need people to do their bit and help avoid being the victim of burglary. As we approach summer then please don't let crime prevention slip. Always make sure windows and doors are closed and secure, especially overnight.

"Look after your valuables and your property and keep an eye out for people hanging around and looking suspicious, report this to us straight away and we will take action."

Burglary will remain a priority for officers in Newcastle and Gateshead for June and across the summer months.
